New to group

I have been a Slacker since I first started using Linux, back in 1997.  I 
have tried RedHat and didn't like it.  I lived with SuSE 6.4 for a while, but 
I didn't like the RPM package management.  I like plain old tar.tgz and 
manual configuration, etc.  I have finally gotten the Slackware 8.0.  I don't 
expect another release for about a year, and I should be happy with this.  I 
don't know if Slackware will be around for too much longer, however.  They 
had moved their web site, and many in the development group had left.
All of this from the Slack site some months ago.  Any feedback on this?
I hope it sticks around, because I don't want to have to bother with package 
management stuff, with all of the dependencies and stuff like that.  I am 
quite comfortable where I am at. (who knows, Slack 8 may be the last 
upgrade I will ever need,  I may just upgrade packages as I need them from
here on out.
