On a mailing list for my Psion PDA (the list is in German) there was a
huge uproar at one point at how poorly the keyboards were holding up. The
thread went on for a while, got tons of posts and was building up a lot of
support. Then someone posted about how the cigarette residue on the hands
caused the problem or some such and he hadn't met any non-smokers with
this problem. The thread died instantly :).

Smoke and dust are really bad for a computer. So are water and candle wax
( completely different group and she got a lot of hell for that one :).

At mot I got to see a case I really didn't believe until I'd really looked
at the computers. We had a room with quite a few computers in it that was
near a double-door. The person who worked in the room complained about the
dust that came in ( you really couldn't ever see or feel the cloud of dust
) when the double-doors got opened. I went through and cleaned several of
the computers and was really amazed at the amount of dirt and sand, not
just dust puppies, in them.

If one smokes one has to realize that components will probably fail more
often, especially if one smokes in the same room as the computer.
