I've been playing with one of the external "modems" at home since a
marketdroid sent it to my honeywell boss. I'm in Phoenix about 35th
ave and deer valley (i.e. far north, but still in recv zone).  Best
speeds I've seen are about 180k downstream and 5xK upstream.

Most of the deals I've seen are $75 per month, and the modem costs you
either $99 for the external (usb and com cables included) or $199 for
the PCMCIA version.
