disk mirroring

Yes, RAID 1 is mirroring and you can do it in software.  Check the
HOWTOs at www.linuxdoc.org related to this.

However keep in mind this protects only against drive failure.  There
are plenty of other ways to hose your data, and it's certainly no
substitute for doing backups.
