It is not necessary to install linux on a computer to use the rawrite 
program.  Put the linux CD in the Win box and look for the DOSUTILS 
directory your friend mentioned.  Run the rawrite program from the CD in an 
MS-DOS prompt window on your Win box.  It will work fine.
