EJB -- Anyone have experience with this?

I attended a COM+ seminar a couple months back. The lecturer was a guy who
used to work for IBM and was a contributor to the CORBA standard. He went
over the three most common component architectures(COM+, CORBA and EJB) and
talked about their strengths and weaknesses.

If I remember correctly, he summarized them like so:
	EJB:
		gives you three different architectures(2 exactly the same
as COM+)
		you can only implement in Java - doesn't comply with any
other languages
		tend to get locked in to vendors(which tends to be a Bad
Thing(tm) )

	CORBA:
		truly platform-independent, language-independent
architecture
		implements some cool things(and has a LOT of support for
Java)
		performance is somewhat sluggish

You probably didn't want to hear about COM+, so I won't go into it. But the
presentation gave me the impression that if I wanted to use a component
architecture, I would want to go towards a more open standard such as CORBA;
that way I won't be limited to one single language or platform. It all
depends on what you're trying to do...

I am investigating Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB).  This is a new
standard that allows for "componentizing" software.  This is
discussed in the May 2000 issue of Application Development
Trends Magazine.

Sun and IBM and IBM vs Sun figure prominently in this
article.  It appears to me that as IBM and Sun spar off at each
other in gathering applications and services that the end user
will benefit greatly and the Open Source Community will have
another powerful weapon in the war with M$.
