I see your responses on this list server often.
You appear to know what you are talking about
technically. I appreciate your helping us that
are just starting or have less experience.

I installed RedHat 4.2 several times several years
ago however I could never figure out how to get X
configured. I was very busy at the time and could
not put forth the effort to get Linux going.

I installed Caldera's OpenLinux 1.3 in December
and had some difficulties with monitor resolution.

I then installed Caldera's OpenLinux 2.3 and
everything worked fine. I have been using linux
exclusively since Y2K started -> 6 months.  I
should add full-time or about 50 plus hours a
week.

I have taught myself to create CGI scripts in Perl
along with DBI and MySql. My site at
http://www.christian-home.net is created on my
desktop, which I have setup to emulate my internet
site, using MySql data, text files, Perl scripts,
and shell scripts. My Web pages are not created
by an editor. Once I create the site or modify it
locally I tarball it and FTP it to the space I
rent on my ISP and untar it.

About 14 months ago I had no idea how the internet
worked. I wanted to create
http://www.christian-home.net at that time however
I had no clue what to do. I didn't even know one
HTML Tag. I had heard of CGI however I had no
clue what it was or how it worked. After all I
was an Xbase programmer -> DbaseII, DbaseIII,
DbaseIII+, Clipper, FoxBase, FoxPro DOS, FoxPro
Windows, and Visual FoxPro. I didn't know one
Unix/Linux command.

I had done alot of reading and knew that Linux was
the way to go so I embraced it. Though my travels
I found out about Perl and thought it would be
good for site automation, I embraced it. I found
an online HTML tutorial and I studied it. I found
an online tutorial on Perl/CGI and I studied it
also.

Am I good at any of this - NO. I Struggle every
hour of every day. I have set some ambitious
goals and I know I will meet them.

I am envious of most of you on this list server,
and I look up to you, because you seem to have an
intimate knowledge of how Linux works.

I find technology difficult. I stated with an
8088 with two 360k drives and 640k RAM running DOS
3.1. I've seen a lot of changes in the field and
have had to continually have to learn new
technologies, however I still find it difficult to
grasp a new technology. Once I get over the hump
I find I do better than most.

I am at that place with Linux. I find it
difficult and not intuitive at all. That is why I
ask so many questions - because I am struggling -
I'm having a hard time.

I know once I get over that hump I will sail with
it, however until then........

So Craig as you can see I agree with your
statement "The only way to learn is to do it."

If anyone on this list server feels my questions
are annoying please let me know and I will remove
myself.

I thank all of you for allowing me to take up your
time with this post.

Keith
