actually it's /dev/hda7 which i modified the command for

I'm sure it's a pebkac (problem exists between keyboard and chair).
so i figured that if i take myself out of the equation maybe this too shall 
come to pass!

I will try the of=/someplace/else.  this is a 8gb drive which is sliced into 
5 partitions /2gb fat/3gb ntfs/126gb linswap/1.9gb root/ 1.1gb home.
