Linksys router

I have one of the Linksys routers and use it currently for my internet
distribution to three windows machines and two linux machines. The reason I
got it was because I had an immediate need for a firewall/gateway that
would work with 'Netmeeting' (my wife started taking classes at Phoenix
College and this is what they use) and there was no direct support for it
in ipchains/linux kernel. I tried the workarounds in the How-Tos but the
Netmeeting connection kept getting dropped through my ipchains
firewall/gateway. If any of you have been in this situation, you know what
I mean by IMMEDIATE!

Pros: Easy browser interface setup was about ten minutes for all five
machines.
     Controls are easy to understand.
Allows port forwarding (limited number of ports)
Supports most internet games and programs like AIM
Cons. Limited options (port forwarding limit is 10 ports I think, DMZ
machine limit is ONE)
No logging option as yet. (this is a BIG problem for me)
Firmware update to 3.0 required to avoid CRC errors on large downloads

When the need for Netmeeting is over (or if I find a usable workaround for
the Netmeeting access through a firewall) I will go back to
ipchains/iptables.

I got the version with 4 switched ports for a screaming price barely more
than a 10/100 switch (check buy.com for a new customer discount coupon -
will save you $30) which allowed me to rationalize the future usefulness
of the unit (as a switch only).

Bottom line: It is a great piece of hardware for the typical user or home
office. If you have a separate linux machine and are even a linux newbie,
use ipchains/iptables unless you have a limiting reason like I did.

Hi List:

My current set up is a non-static assigned IP address from Cox@Home.
I'd like to configure DHCP for my Red Hat 6.1. I'm sure that for the
more season veterans out there this maybe duck soup, but configuring
DHCP puts fear in my heart at this point.

I see where Linksys may have a solution for me:

Any comments/suggestions on this product?

Thanks,

Mike
