Which tape back-up hardware is good

That's it's job in life. Go elsewhere for real tape drives :).

For scsi, e.g. the way to go if you're really serious, I've had Ecrix
recommended to me. I'm planning on getting one in the near future.

The tests for Ecrix are pretty cool. They dunk tapes in boiling water and
coffee :).

For ide I've had OnStream recommended to me. They're supposed to be pretty
good.

DLT has done well for me in the past and I know of quite a few people who
use it with Linux. DLT 8000s are supposed to have probs. DLT 7000s are
supposed to be eoled in the near future...

For scsi tape dev is /dev/st0. Then just use tar, cpio, dd, bru, whatever
as normal. The vendors will have patches if necessary.
