The following entries in the .exrc file can help with Perl.
The first generates a Perl executable using -w and use strict;
The second writes the buffer and checks syntax:

"Make the file a perl executable and use strict;.
map #8 ^[1G^[:r!which perl^MA -w^[I#!^[kddo^Muse strict;^M^M^[:w\|!chmod +x
%^Mi

"Check perl syntax.
map #7 ^[:w\|! perl -c %^M
Of course ^M is ctrl-V ctrl-M and ^[ is ctrl-V esc.
