moin, moin,

The topic of this month's east side meeting is supposed to be 3D
modeller/renderer Blender from Brian Cluff. Looks like he'll be out
sick and Michael Crusoe will be filling in with a presentation on
bioinformatics. Thanks to Michael for the pinch-hit.

The west side talk will be Marty Stoneman talking about patent law. He is
open to questions, so feel free to show up with some in mind or contact
Alexander before the meeting to pre-ask them. More info below.

fingerprints and related data in a 2D barcode utilizing both minutia- and
spectral-pattern-based strategies, he has authored research on the use of
identification cards and booklets at the federal level around the world and
any use of biometrics therein. A Debian GNU/Linux(server and desktop) user,
Michael is interested in limited-domain artificial intelligence and is an

Time: 19:00 on Tuesday, the 27th of April

Olive (Dunlap) and 59th Avenue in the High Tech 1 Teleconference Room.

Abstract: _Strategy Arsenals for Technology Protection: Getting the Most
Bang for Your Buck_. The talk will feature all of the basics of patent
law, and includes most of the stuff we're interested in, like Amazon's
one-click patent. Alexander can field questions, alexanderhenry@cox.net , so
he can send them to Marty so he can tailor the talk. Marty's also a very
'interruptible' speaker, and generally a lot of fun. He'll gladly confront
all the most paranoid and fearful questions hackers have about patent use
today.

Bio: Marty Stoneman, http://www.patentdoc.com/ , has been practicing patent
law since 1961, and his firm was founded on the basis that all lawyer
jokes are true. Speaking to as many people interested in patent law as
possible while giving away as many 'lawyer secrets' is one of many ways
Marty polarizes himself from those lawyers for whom those jokes hold true.

ePortfolios from Audree Thurman
Blender II, a follow-up to the first Blender presentation, from Brian Cluff
Bioinformatics from Michael Crusoe ( if he doesn't already give it this month )
Ruby from Chris Gehlker

Didn't get the announcement out in time to cover Chris Gehlker's
presentation on Ruby for PLUG-devel. He will also be covering Ruby for the
West Side meeting in the near future.

The location for the devel meetings will be changing as Adtron is
moving. Bring up suggestions/issues on the PLUG-devel mailing list.

Where: Adtron Corporation, 3710 E. University Drive, Suite 4, Phoenix, AZ

Abstract: Ruby is one of the newer scripting languages on the scene. Ruby
is an object oriented scripting language that emphasizes clarity, doing the
intuitive thing, and above all fun. While it bears a superficial resemblance
to Perl, its semantics are very much those of smalltalk.

Bio: Chris Gehlker has been messing about with computers so long he can
recall building LP models in Fortran. He is an enthusiastic Ruby user.
He is the author of RubyStudio, a Ruby IDE for Mac OS X. His current
Ruby interests include, a game written in Ruby called SCO: The Game of
Intellectual Property and Ruby AL, an extension of Ruby for scripting Open
and MS Office.
