Mastodon is a decentralized, open source social network. It implements
ActivityPub for compatibility with other federated services such as
Plume blog engine, PixelFed picture sharing service and PeerTube video
sharing service.
Mastodon has per message privacy controls. Each message can be fully
public, unlisted, private of direct.
Mastodon also gives you multiple options to block content, accounts or
even complete domains.
Since Mastodon is federated there are many servers. Choose the
independently-operated service that meets your needs. Like email, you
aren't limited to just members of that particular service. You can even
install your own instance.
Mastodon posts are limited to 500 characters and intentionally do not
have rich text. It's for microblogging :).
