they are probably used to open your pdf files faster, see how long it takes to open a big pdf after you remove them all, then see how long it takes on subsequent opens. if you have plenty of ram make a ramdisk and create a symbolic link of that directory to the ramdisk, then they all go away when you shut down. If this is an SSD, then I would definitely do that to save on wear and tear.
